Mouse & Track Ball Usage:

The mouse is the basic input device most people use to operate the Windows desktop.  The mouse has two buttons, left and right.

For a person using the mouse with the right hand, the index finger is placed on the left (primary) mouse button, the middle finger is placed on the right (secondary) mouse button, and the thumb is placed as shown in the picture.

To operate the mouse simply move the mouse in any direction, this will move the screen cursor (mouse pointer) in relation to the mouse movement.

The mouse can be used with either the right or left hand.  If you prefer, or need to use the mouse with your left hand, the mouse settings can be changed to accommodate your needs.

With older people who suffer a condition that causes them problems when using a mouse, we have installed a right handed track ball on the computers to assist these people.

The track ball is used in much the same way, as a mouse, the only difference is the track ball remains still, whilst the thumb rolls the ball.

The track ball is designed to reduce the amount of wrist movement, normally needed to operate a mouse.  As indicated in the picture, the thumb is used on the ball, whilst the index and middle fingers are placed on the left and right buttons respectively.

The use of the mouse or track ball is a task in its self.  The ability of moving the mouse pointer (cursor) to the exact position on the screen needs practice, especially for a person who has never used this equipment before.

The lifesaver or trainer, will guide you in the use of the mouse, and we suggest, the use of a card game such as solitaire (Patience), be used to acquire these skills.  The normal use of the mouse, not only requires skill in positioning the cursor, but the ability to highlight text and pictures, drag and drop, or manipulate the screen area.

When you are comfortable with the mouse or track ball, and have mastered its usage we can take you into the new world of computer usage.

Take your time, and make sure you are comfortable when ever you are using the mouse or track ball.
